Lip neutralization- what is it and who needs it?

A dark lip neutralization tattoo is a form of cosmetic tattooing where pigments are deposited into the lips with the goal of neutralizing or lightening their natural color. The reason for this may be to correct or balance out uneven or dark lip tones for more consistent color and natural results. Individuals with scars or discoloration on their lips might choose this procedure as well to camouflage imperfections and create a smoother appearance. This can also be done as a first step to lip blushing with the goal of a more noticable and vibrant color to enhance the lips, which must be lightened enough to create a lip blush result that appears more bold and sarurated.

Those with uneven or dark pigmentation on their lips who are looking for a long-lasting solution to lip color without the need for regular makeup application may consider neutralization tattoos. It's essential to carefully research and consult with a qualified professional before deciding to undergo this cosmetic procedure. It's also important to note that this process can take multiple sessions of tattooing which can be costly. Lip blush is typically done in two sessions but if a client's lips need to be neutralized they can expect to need an additional touch up and in some cases, up to 4-5 appointments total to achieve their desired results. Generally, melanated or darker skin tones tend to have a thicker epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin) compared to lighter skin tones, which means it can be more difficult to build up saturation when tattooing.

Anyone with dark lips who wants lip blushing will need to have their lips neutralized. The first step is to discuss the client's goals and set realistic expectations for the outcome, such as how the color will look fresh versus healed and how many appointments they should plan for. Then, the artist will select an appropriate color based on the undertones of the client's lips and desired results. Warm tones can help counteract the darkness in lips, creating a more balanced and natural color. This color correction is achieved through the principle of color theory. Warm hues can effectively camouflage any underlying discoloration or pigmentation irregularities in the lips. Colors such as peach and coral are often chosen but warm pink, red, and orange can be used as well. It's important to consider the client's end goal for color when selecting which color to neutralize with. Once the desired results are achieved, annual refresh appointments are recommended to maintain the color of the tattoo.
