Lip Blush: Are you a good candidate?

Anyone who wants to enhance their natural lips with more color and definition can be a candidate for lip blush! It's an amazing service for someone who doesn't want to think about reapplying lip color throughout the day and wants to wake up everyday looking refreshed and ready to go.
But let's talk about who might not be the ideal candidate for lip blush. Here is a list of the basic contradictions of permanent makeup:
• You cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Avoid taking antibiotics 2 months prior to your cosmetic tattoo appointment.
For 2-3 weeks prior to your appointment:
• Avoid getting filler or injections in the lip area.
• Avoid deep exfoliation treatments such as chemical peels.
For one week before your lip blush service:
• Avoid direct UV exposure to the lip area and saunas.
• Discontinue use of fish oil and vitamin E.
• Do not take ibuprofen or other blood thinners. If you are prescribed blood thinners, please consult with your doctor and inform your artist of their advice.
For 1 to 3 days prior:
• Avoid consuming caffeine on the day of your appointment.
• Avoid consuming alcohol 24 hours prior.
• If you are prone to cold sores or have ever had a cold sore, ask your doctor for an antiviral prescription such as acyclovir. Start taking it 3 days prior to your service and continue for 3 days after.
Now that we've covered the basic pre-care requirements in order to help achieve desired results, there are other factors outside of a client's control that may not make them a good fit for lip blush.
These factors might include:
• Sun damage or hypopigmentation
• Super dry or super oily skin types.
• Scarring on the lips.
• Skin tone of Fitzpatrick IV or V, or very dark lips or dark hyperpigmentation.
• Prior lip tattoo.
Although these factors might not be ideal, it doesn't make someone in these categories impossible to work on. Typically these cases just take more touch up appointments to achieve the desired results, but the artist should consult with the client first to assess the lips and decide if they are comfortable working on them. It's also important to understand that any specific result cannot be guaranteed. For example, if a client has sun damaged lips, it may not be obvious until the artist starts tattooing the lips or it might be worse than what they initially thought. The lips may not hold color or heal well which is out of both the artist's and client's control.
The factors listed above can each cause the skin to be resistant to absorbing the pigment. There are ways the artist can trouble shoot some of these challenges and offer additional touch ups to achieve the desired results. Unfortunately, there are some cases in which the client simply might not be a good candidate for the service and there isn't much that can be done to change that. Communication is always very important in these situations to make sure clients have realistic expectations.
Are you an artist experiencing these challenges? Are you a potential client for lip blushing but still aren't sure if you're a good fit? Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions!
