You've decided you want to get lip blushing to wake up everyday with beautiful color, better shape, and more definition- but how do you choose the perfect shade that's going to last 2 to 3 years? Your artist is here to help!
There are a few factors that come into play when choosing a color for your lip tattoo.
It's important to take skin tone into consideration such as where you land on the Fitzpatrick scale and whether your skin is cool, warm, or neutral.
Think about which colors you are typically drawn toward when choosing a lipstick or lip gloss.
Consider how subtle or bold you want your lip blush look to be.
Skin Tones
Your artist will first consider the shade of your skin when selecting pigment and technique for lip blush. According to the Fitzpatrick scale, there are 6 skin types. Types I, II, and III range from light (pale) to medium (olive). Types IV, V, and VI are olive, brown, and dark brown/black. Those with melanin rich skin will likely need additional sessions to achieve their desired results as a dark base needs to be lightened in order for lip blush pigment to be noticeable.
The shade of your skin and identifying your undertones is a very important step in the lip blush color selection process. A common way to pinpoint undertones is to examine the veins on your wrist. If they appear more blue, you likely have cool undertones. If they appear greenish, you probably have warm undertones. Neutral undertones may show a mix. Typically, cool colors with a blue or purple base look better on those with cool skin tones and warm colors with a yellow or orange base look better on those with warm tones. If your skin appears to be neutral, you could go either way!
Go-To Color Choices
Do you have a favorite lipstick, tint, or gloss? Bring it with you to your appointment! Showing your artist your go-to lip color is super helpful when choosing the color of your lip tattoo. It's possible to color match when mixing a pigment and your artist can make adjustments to suit your skin tone if necessary or suggest something similar that might suit you better.
If you don't have an everyday lip color that you love to apply, it can be fun to look through your artist's work portfolio and instagram page to get some inspo. Screenshot some work that you love so your artist can get an idea of colors that speak to you! Be sure to check out healed results at well so you know what to expect when lip blush has settled and looks more natural.
Color Coverage
Lip blush can range from very natural, sheer results to opaque and bold. The most common selection is somewhere in between with a natural-looking medium density. The amount of coverage can really affect the way your chosen color will look healed. For example, if you choose a berry lip color but want it to be a sheer tint, it will still heal looking very natural. But if you choose that same color and build up the color to be opaque, it's going to be bold. It's always best to start more conservative with color and density, as that gives you the option to get used to your new lip shade and build up the coverage at future appointments.
Hopefully you now feel more comfortable and confident when going into your lip blush appointment. Keep in mind that it's absolutely possible to adjust your shade at any future appointment. You won't be stuck with one color forever. If you decide you want to switch it up down the road, your artist can make some changes within reason!
